Last Words of Jesus: “I am Thirsty”

This lesson continues Mike’s series on the sayings of Jesus on the cross.

[NOTE: Audio is lost at about 20 minutes into the sermon.]

Jesus endured intense suffering in his final days – physical pain, hunger, thirst. It is that pain and suffering that shows he was a man when He lived on this earth:

“For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way…”
Hebrews 2:17 (NIV)

“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)

As Jesus hung on the cross, only John records that Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” It is an acknowledgment of his humanity, yet he was the Son of God.

In this lesson, Mike explores the humanity of Jesus, the Savior of the world.

“Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

John 19:28-30 (NIV)
