Summer Series: Hebrews 9

Hebrews 9 – Barrett Vanlandingham

Barrett is the minister at the Ft. Gibson Church of Christ. He and Lisa have three children, and have been married for 28 years.

The previous chapter (8:7) makes it clear that the first covenant (with Israel) had a problem, and was replaced by a new one (8:13). In chapter 9, the writer begins to detail the new covenant, providing a number comparisons between Jesus and the New Testament, and the law of Moses and the tabernacle.

Key Point: The Old Testament priest and tabernacle were only “copies” – or physical representations – of “heavenly things.” Ultimately, chapter 9 continues to reveal the superiority of Christ and the new covenant.

“It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he never heaven itself, now to appear for  us in god’s presence.”
