Taming the Tongue

In Matthew 12:33-37 Jesus taught that a man (a tree) could be easily identified by his actions (its fruit), and teaches that our speech is a reflection of our hearts.

“And I tell you this, that you must give account on Judgment Day
for every idle word you speak.
Your words now reflect your fate then:
either you will be justified by them or you will be condemned.”

Very strong words!!

Clearly, taming the tongue is not, first and foremost, about trying NOT to say certain things. First and foremost, it’s about changing the condition of the heart.

“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Matthew 12:34).”

“Some people like to make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise soothe and heal.”

Proverbs 12:18 (The Living Bible)
