This is the seventh lesson in Mike’s series, Overcoming Overload, based on the book of the same name, by Steve and Mary Farrar.
Consider this idea: Wrong comparison corrupts contentment.
Why are we happy with something, until we discover that someone has something a little better? Why is it often so difficult to accept where we are or what we have?
In this sermon, Mike asked for three young people to volunteer for a simple illustration. The three joined Mike up front, and Mike proceeded to give them all gifts – one at a time.
The first girl was given a 12 oz. Dr. Pepper and a mini Snickers bar, and she lit up with joy! She was truly excited!
Then, Mike gave the second girl a 20 oz. Dr. Pepper and a large Snickers bar. She, too, was happy…but the first girl frowned.
The third girl then received a 32 oz. Dr. Pepper and a whole package of Snicker bars. She, of course, was happy to get an even larger gift, but the first girl seemed disappointed. Later, she admitted that she felt like she had missed out!
Then, Mike asked her how her gift compared to everyone in the audience who received nothing.
