Attitudes of the Heart: A Holy Heart

This is the second lesson in Mike’s series entitled “Attitudes of the Heart.”

“Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.” This quotation from Billy Sunday (and commonly used by Jeff Walling) is an introduction to the concept of holiness.

Being holy is about becoming what God intends for you to be; it is about being “inwardly” changed. In this lesson, Mike describes the concept of holiness and the importance of real change. As the Hebrew writer notes, “without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 4:12).

In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Timothy 2:20-22

A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.

Romans 2:28-29
