Elijah: Who Are You Dancing With?

This lesson is a continuation of Mike’s series on Bible characters.

The prophet Elijah appeared before the people of Israel and asked a simple question: “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him. (1 Kings 18:21 NIV).”

The interesting part of that question is that the Hebrew word for “waver” is the the same word for “dance.” Later, in 1 Kings 18:26, the Bible says that the prophets of Baal “danced” around their altar.

In this lesson, Mike asks, “Who are you dancing with?”

“At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.’”

1 Kings 18:36-37 (NIV)
