This lesson continues Mike’s series on the sayings of Jesus on the cross.
There is a point on the cross where Jesus feels abandoned and alone, and He quotes a passage from Psalm 22: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Was Jesus all alone? Did the Father abandon him? Or was Jesus just acutely aware of how David felt in Psalm 22 and echoing those thoughts? After all, Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
In this lesson, Mike reveals the connection between the death of Jesus and the atonement promises of the Old Testament. On the cross, Jesus bore all the sins of the world – something he had to choose to do, and do alone.
“From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lemasabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’).”
Matthew 27:45-46 NIV
“And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.”
Deuteronomy 31:18 NIV
“Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants; he will take vengeance on his enemies and make atonement for his land and people.”
Deuteronomy 32:43 NIV
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 NIV
