Life with Purpose

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:17,23-24 (NIV)

The context in which Paul offers this exhortation is that of the great blessing of forgiveness and the indwelling of Christ himself in us.  “…the glorious riches of (the great) mystery… is Christ in you, the hope of glory.”  It is God with us — in us — for we are the temple of the Lord.

So if anything is worth doing, it is worth doing from a place of thankfulness and purpose — thankfulness because God is so good to all us, all the time; and purpose because everything we do is about more than simply the doing, it is about honoring God.

It means there is no small task.  There is nothing meaningless or menial for the heavenly kingdom citizen.  There is only life before God, with God and for God.

How you wake up your child in the morning is opportunity.  The coffee you fix and the heart with which you drink it is an opportunity.  The lunch meeting with your client is about more than work.  Following the routine steps of your day, that almost go by unnoticed, are noteworthy, because they are opportunity for praise, for thanksgiving and for blessing — maybe you, maybe another, maybe God.  Nothing about today is meaningless, unless we miss it.

The context of your life and the happenings of your everyday is your citizenship in the kingdom of God, purchased for you by the blood of Christ, for the purpose of living intentionally before God, with God, and for God.

Don’t miss the day.  Too many slip passed us unnoticed, unappreciated, and unfulfilled.  God has great stuff planned.

We just need to step into it.
